LOCATION<\/strong><\/p>\n

Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park is located west of R\u00fcgen Island, alongside the coastal area of the Federal Land Meklenburg \u2013 Vorpommern. The park consists mostly of coastal areas; the two little islands of Hiddensee and Umsatz, the west coast of R\u00fcgen Island, the Darss and Zingst peninsulas and numerous sandy and shallow lagoons. The park is accessible from the land (on foot or by bike) and the sea (by boat or kayak). The park area is 805 km2<\/sup>. The park headquarters are located in Born. Geographical location:\u00a0 54\u00b028N\u00a012\u00b054\u2032E.<\/p>\n

NATURE SIGHTSEEING\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2018 the National Park website was still only in German and it looks like the number of internet sources in English (and other languages) is quite limited.\u00a0 Germany has good reason to keep this national park a secret – endless beaches, sandy lagoons, park islands with herds of cattle, forests, grassy dunes and white cliffs with hundreds of kilometres of bike trails and many opportunities to kayak and sail. The place is home to more than 30,000 white storks wintering in the lagoons every year. The most effective way to go sightseeing here is by bike, with numerous panoramic views at comfortable vista points. The park allows some fishing, agriculture (e.g. livestock keeping) and forestry. They maintain that keeping the cattle on the lagoon island helps to preserve its rare plants (high salt peat)! So cows are, essentially, the guardians of rare plants. Unbelievable! Come and see it for yourself!<\/p>\n

ATTRACTIONS <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Park organizes numerous activities for groups, families and individual tourists. To check what is available go to the website (in German only) and select the activity section from the menu. – you can use popular internet translators to find out more details. Examples of guided park tours include such as: \u201cWalk in the woods for families with children from 5 years\u201d , \u201cHigh sky, wide country – between surf and salt meadows, bike tour to the Pramort\u201d,\u00a0 \u201cBetween the shores, hike with cliff-stories, birdsongs listening and panoramic views”,\u00a0 \u201cLocal guide, amusing walk through Wieck with village history and traditions\u201d- here are just a couple of examples of the activities on offer.<\/p>\n
