The Hanseatic City of Stralsund is located in northeastern Germany at the Strelasund, the \u201cgate to R\u00fcgen\u201d, Germany\u2019s biggest island. The history, in particular the membership in the Hanseatic League and the long \u201cSwedish Period\u201d are the main reasons for attracting tourists and since 2002 the old center is UNESCO World Heritage site.<\/p>\n

HISTORY AND SCENIC CHARACTER <\/strong><\/p>\n

The city is almost 800 years old \u2013 granted city rights are from 1234. The biggest economic and political relevance together with remarkable prosperitywas the period of Hanseatic League in 13th<\/sup> and 14th<\/sup> centuries and in 17th<\/sup> and 18th<\/sup> centuries Stralsund stood under Swedish rule. Since 2002 Stralsund is enrolled in the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites due to its unique representative of the Hanseatic League city type. The city\u2019s silhouette is still dominated by impressive towers of three medieval churches, although today the R\u00fcgen bridge, a huge building of a shipyard and the modern building of the DeutschesMeeresmuseum, a fine oceanographic museum, complete the picture.<\/p>\n

ATTRACTIONS <\/strong><\/p>\n

The old town of Stralsund is considered ideal Hanseatic city\u201cfrom the heyday of the league of towns of the 14th<\/sup> century. The historic city centers have almost completely retained their medieval layout and bear witness to the construction of maritime trade cities following the law of L\u00fcbeck. Numerious outstanding monuments illustrate the political importance and the extraordinary wealth of the Baltic Sea towns in the Middle Ages and their affiliation to the Swedish era in the 17th<\/sup> and 18th<\/sup> centuries.\u201d (source 1) In the medieval center the most impressive views can be found on the Old Market square (Alter Markt), where the decorative wall of the medieval Town Hall gives an impression of the city\u2019s enormous wealth. The narrow streets of the old town invite to a stroll which allows for discoveries of fine architecture, small shops and welcoming caf\u00e9s and restaurants.<\/p>\n
