ATRACTION DESCRIPTION

Fortress was built between 1559 and 1565. It was created by John Albert IDuke of Mecklenburg-Güstrowto secure Mecklenburg’s border on the Elbe river. It was one of the strongest in the area, made on the base of the older fort from the XIII th century. The location of the fortress was ideal to protectsouth-western border and the Elbe crossings. The fort was designed by the Italian military engineer Francesco a Bornau. The bastion is arranged in the form of a pentangle, with vaulted casemates. The renaissance architecture of the fort is rather strategic than esthetic, although the main gate is decorated with several carved reliefs, with coats of arms of Mecklenburg and Brandenburg. There has been a museum since 1953, fortress was added to the list of protected landmarks in 1975 and has now become a place of culture.
