LOCATION

The Doberan Minster is located in the town of Bad Doberan, close to the Baltic Sea to the west of the Hanseatic city of Rostock. It is the remaining part of the Cistercian Doberan Abbey, nowadays used as Lutheran church.

HISTORY AND SCENIC CHARACTER

Architecturally is the Doberan Minster a mixture of a high gothic cathedral, influenced by the building code of the

Cistercians, by French cathedral style and also by elements of other Hanseatic churches. It became the most important burial site for the Dukes of Mecklenburg.

The remaining buildings of the abbey are uniquely documenting historical monuments.

ATTRACTIONS

The Doberan Minster is an important religious heritage of the European Route of Brick Gothic and labeled as UNESCO world heritage.

There is a large amount of the original interior remaining intact, in particular the oldest winged altar, the cross altar, preserved Cistercian furnishing and the tomb of Danish Queen Margarete Sambiria.
