LOCATION

Hiddensee is small island of only 19 square kilometers in the Baltic Sea located very close (3 km) west of the island of Rügen. The island extends from North to South for about 16 kilometers, but has only a small East-West extension, the shape resembles to a seahorse.

Since 1990 it is part of the „Nationalpark Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft“.

You can approach the island only by ferry, private car-use is not allowed. Inhabitants and guests use bicycles or horse-carriages. Coordinates: 54°32′N 13°05′E.

SCENIC CHARACTER

This lovely island is a Baltic Sea coast treasure. It Is characterized by a delightful scenery and meditative tranquility, which makes it a popular destination for many visitors all over the year.

The best-known landmark of the island of Hiddensee is the lighthouse on the hilly Dornbusch area in the north of the island. An amazing view on the idyllic surroundings unfolds when ascending the lighthouse, especially in early summer, when the area is covered with bright yellow blooming broom. The Dornbusch area is surrounded by a fascinating steep coast, which is partly accessible.

The western coast of the Island is famous for its long sandy beaches and dune scenery. Dunes and heath areas are characterized by a unique flora and fauna.

ATTRACTIONS

A visit to the Island, starting from Stralsund or Schaprode/Ruegen is an attraction in itself. Exploration by bike or on horseback is recommended. As the island is a protected breeding ground and resting place for a number of bird species under threat of extinction, nature lovers and bird watchers can take a guided walk around the Island, offered from June to September. You will have the opportunity so cranes, geese ducks and waders.

The major settlements of the islands have a lot to offer: Kloster, in the North, has been an artists’ retreat for a long time, many famous painters, writers and musicians have spent time on the Island. Best known is the house of long-time summer inhabitant, German writer Gerhart Hauptmann. It can be visited as a museum as well as during cultural events as readings or concerts. The small church in Kloster with its graveyard invite to contemplative visits. Vitte, located in the middle of the Island, can be regarded as the business center of the Island with the biggest harbour. Nonnendorf is a quite place in the south of the Island, an ideal place for families.
