1. Sct. Bendts kirke, Ringsted

ATRACTION DESCRIPTION

Ringsted was always an important religious center. In pre-Christian times, people had been coming there from whole island to make sacrifice to the gods in a place called Hringstadir. Probably this is a reason why the first brick church in whole Scandinavia was located here. Sankt Bendts Kirke was built around 1170 A.D. in romanesque style. It used to be a part of the monastery. Unfortunately, there were terrible fire in XVIII century, and the monastery burnt down. The church has an important meaning for the history of Danish royalty. There are tombs of many kings and queens. Outside of the building there is a statue of Valdemar the Great (1138-1182) who founded the church.
