LOCATION
The town Ludwigslust is located in the German state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, 35 km south of the state capital Schwerin, and is part of the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. In the past this town has been an important political centre (residence town) for a short period, then for longer times until 1992 a garrison town. There are still many historic buildings, due to the castle and palace garden the town is labeled “Versailles of the North”.

HISTORY AND SCENIC CHARACTER
In 1724 a little hunting lodge was built near a small village. In 1765 this place became the capital of the duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and a residential castle was built. But the town lost its political relevance when the capital status returned to Schwerin in 1837. To substitute this loss the town became a more and more relevant garrison town for armies of different nations until reunification of Germany. Since 1992 the area of barracks was converted into civil use, like residential area, shopping centre, office buildings and public facilities.
Today the town is known for its heritage, a high number of historic buildings in the old city centre and the castle.
Marketing likes also to promote Ludwigslust as „town of linden trees” as many trees of these species can be found all over the town.
ATTRACTIONS
Besides the well-known castle (Ludwigslust Palace) and its palace garden in English landscape style there is a “Stadtkirche” (city-church) in Neoclassical style built in 1765-1770. This church shows a portico with six doric pillars and looks like a Greek temple.
The “Natureum” is -besides the castle – the oldest building of the town and today a “nature museum”.
A must for tourists is the mainstreet “Schloßstraße”. That is a 35m wide street with clear and symmetric structure and corresponding buildings.
