LOCATION

Stralsund is a city located at the southern coast of the Strelasund – the strait that separates the island of Rügen from the mainland. It is communicated with the island of Rügen by road and by rail. There is a bridge connecting Stralsund with the island of Rügen. The town is located in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Germany, 54°18′N 13°05′E.

SCENIC CHARACTER

The Old Market Square is surrounded by buildings from different periods, for example the gothic Town Hall, St Nicholas’ Church or the baroque Commandantenhus. The medieval town is full of red bricks that were baked in ovens. You will see them in the walls of churches, monasteries and the Town Hall. Stralsund is the city where tradition meets modernity. Besides medieval buildings, a baroque palace you will find a modern townhouse. The tower of St Mary’s Church, which was in the 17thcentury the highest building in Europe, provides a nice view over the island of Rügen. You may want to listen to the clatter of the masts of ships in a harbour.

ATTRACTIONS

The city with the hanseatic tradition is also a good shopping location nowadays. The Strela Sound with wild fish is a perfect place for anglers. OZEANEUM with its aquariums containing sea life of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea received the European Museum of the Year Award in 2010. Many cafes and restaurants, also with local cuisine.
