LOCATION

Landskrona is located on the shore of the Öresund strait, approx. 50 km from Malmö and approx. 35 km from Helsingør. You can reach the city by car, by train or by boat. 55°52′13″N 12°49′49″E

SCENIC CHARACTER

The city owes its origin to the King of Scandinavia, Eric of Pomerania, who, wanting to take full control over shipping and trade in the Baltic Sea, built fortresses in Malmö, Helsingør and Copenhagen and founded the city fortress called Landskrona. The city was built in the place of the former Danish fishing village Sønder Sæby in the province of Scania. Citadels facing each other guarded the passage through the strait – they were prepared both for conducting an artillery attack as well as defending against enemy artillery. To gradually eliminate the commercial movement of Hansa ships, King Eric made contact with merchants from England, Holland and Novgorod. In 1422 King Eryk issued a decree in which the Scandinavian cities obtained a monopoly on trade and craft in the Kalmar Union. In 1549, the Danish king Christian III built a castle in the same place. The castle and the Citadel had been one of the most modern fortresses in the Nordic countries for centuries. In 1720 the city, like its province, became part of Sweden. Today the Citadel is famous for its well-preserved system of moats. It’s a witness to history and a beautiful recreational area.

ATTRACTIONS

There is a lot to see and experience around the Landskrona castle. There are the oldest preserved gardens in the area. The magnificent views from the water tower show the city with its surroundings, the busiest strait of the world going towards Copenhagen and Helsingör. In the nearby former barracks of Adolf Fredriks there is a museum considered one of the most interesting in the country. The castle park is a gallery of contemporary art. Several times a day a ferry goes from Landskrona to the idyllic landscape of Ven Island.
