ATTRACTIONS

Situated on the hill with a stunning view of the VistulaRiver, the Gniew Castle attracts tourists with its magnitude, beautiful interiors and the atmosphere of knights feasts. The castle was the most powerful fortress of the Teutonic Order founded on the left bank of the Vistula. It was built at the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and since then it was the seat of the Teutonic Order Commanders. In Polish times it became the seat of the starosts.  Unfortunately, it burned down in the great fire in 1921. After this event the castle was a ruin for decades. The process of reconstruction was long and it ended recently. Presently, Gniew Castle is a residence of the Marshal of the Pomeranian Province and various associations of history enthusiasts, who actively promote medieval traditions in Poland. The castle hosts performances, historical staging and knightly tournament.
