LOCATION
The Slavic temple fortress of Jaromarsburgis located onthe protected landscape of Cape Arkona. Cape Arkona is a 45-metre-high cape on the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, 55°00′N 13°45′E.

ATRACTION DESCRIPTION
Between the 9th and 12th century, the Jaromarsburg was a place of cult for a Slavic tribe Rani, that was dedicated to their god Svantevit. Situated at the tip of a cape, it was protected from three sides by cliffs and from the land side by a 25-metre-high wall of settlement. The temple castle was named after the Ranenlord Jaromar I. The centerpiece was a four-meter tall Svantovit statue carved out of an oak trunk. The temple grew in importance as a religious center for the Slavs of Mecklenburg after the destruction of Rethra in 1068. Hundred years later, the Danish king Valdemar I conquered Rügen and the land became Christian. Churches were established and both castle and temple destroyed. At the tip of Arkona in recent centuries, the cliffs have repeatedly collapsed into the sea, with the result that only the ramparts of the Jaromarsburg are still visible today.
