HISTORY AND SCENIC CHARACTER

In 1934 the first road bridge was opened at this location to enter the island of Usedom, before there was only a public connection by ferry. It was destroyed in 1945 and re-established in 1948-1950. Due to strongly increasing traffic a new bridge was constructed just aside the old bridge and the old one was dismantled. The opening was in the end of 1996. The new bridge – made by 2.289 tons of steel and a volume of 15.109 m3 concrete – has a total length of 256 metres. The cost of construction was 1,04 mill. German Marks.

It consists of two single-track bascule bridges (span: 20 m), the opening stroke for boats on the Strelasund is 30 metres. It is not only a road bridge but offers now a double-track railway, too.

Due to its blue painting people call the steel construction “Blaues Wunder” (blue wonder).
