ATRACTION DESCRIPTION
Stargard Castle is an extraordinary and unique building in Germany built in the XIII th century through the order of the Margraves Johann I and Otto III von Brandenburg. It is the northernmost preserved castle, standing on a 90 m hill, the oldest secular building in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with the deepest dungeon tower. The hill was settled before 3000 bc. The Slavic tribes encountered remnants of an ancient settlement and called the place Stari Gard (old castle). During the Thirty Years‘ War, the castle served as headquarters, later being a seat of ducal administration. The last witch-hunt in Mecklenburg, and probably the last in Northern Germany, took place in the castle in 1726. The castle, that is a main tourist attraction in the area, offers spectacular views from the tower. There is a herb garden which is worth to visit. Special events e.g. an annual knights‘ tournament take place there.
