ATTRACTIONS

The history of the Old Town in Gdańsk begins in 1343 when the Teutonic Knights gave the privilege settlement arranged at the Długi Targ. It quickly developed into an important militarily, economically and culturally part of the city. The houses at Długa Street and Długi Targ Street were inhabited by the richest merchants and the most distinguished families. It was in this part of Gdańsk that the most important city buildings were built: St. Mary’s Church, the town hall and the Artus Court. At the Royal Route there is a former route of entry of Polish kings: from the Upland Gate to the Green Gate, up to the Żuławska Gate. There are also a number of beautiful tenement houses. In 1945, the Red Army destroyed the Old City almost in 90%. The city managed to rebuild most of the historic tenement houses and reconstruct the old Gothic defensive walls. Until today it is the most important and richest part of Gdańsk.
