LOCATION
Rügen Island is located off the northeastern coast of Meklenburg – the West Pomeranian Region of Germany. It is conveniently located close to the main German– Swedish ferry connection. A biking route is located on the eastern coast of the island and connects a couple of surfing hotspots (see the map). Surfers can use it as a means of transportation or as a day’s excursion break from surfing. The geographical location of the federal country Meklenburg-Vorpommern in Germany is: 54°25′N 13°22′E (central point).
SCENIC CHARACTER
One of the most trendy surfing hotspots on Rügen Island is Neu Murkan and we recommend starting any cycling adventure here. The route runs along the coastline to the south, reaching Resort Binz, Resort Sellin and then further south to Thiessow. It is relatively flat, running through green, forested areas. This 35 kilometre-long route is dotted with restaurants and cafes as well as several beaches and bathing spots. The route’s difficulty level is easy – intermediate, with most of its surface paved, and the starting point is accessible by public transport. The route allows for several sightseeing stops (several historical sites are on the route) and the ride ends in Thiessow village – one of southern Rügen’s best windsurfing spots.
ATTRACTIONS
The whole island of Rügen is a beautiful natural area with diverse coasts, ranging from yellow beaches to white chalk cliffs, and many lagoons and shallow waters. Most of the island is richly forested and the island is home to Jasmund National Park where you can indulge in nature sightseeing, biking, walking etc. There are a couple of interesting museums (like Ocean Aquarium) and places of curiosity (Binz holiday house – the longest in Germany). Fine dining experiences and a range of accommodation can be found in abundance here, especially before and after the high season in the summer (July-August).
