LOCATION

The capital of the island is Rønne and this is most probably where you will start your exploration of Bornholm Island. Nevertheless, the surfing hotspots are located in the eastern part of Bornholm, mostly in the Eastwind watersports centre in Balka and on the Dueodde Strand. Both places are located around 30 kilometres from the island’s capital. Bornholm Island can be accessed either by the ferry from Ystad (Sweden), Køge (Zealand, Denmark) or Sassnitz (Rügen Island, Germany). In summertime there are direct ferries from Świnoujście (Poland). At Rønne there is also a small airport which services flights to Copenhagen. The geographical location of Bornholm Island’s capital Rønne is: 55°06′N 14°42′E.

BORNHOLM SURFING HOTSPOTS

The two main watersports locations are in the southeastern part of Bornholm. They are approximately half an hour’s drive from Rønne. Both places possess broad white sandy beaches and their shallow waters are perfect for beginners to practise in. The places are east-oriented and have typically low flat waves but energetic winds. The Eastwind watersports centre in Balka is located near the quaint old fishing village of Snogebæk.

Dueodde Strand is the most famous beach on Bornholm. According to visitDenmark? the sand is ultra-fine and very inviting. The water is clear and clean with lots of sand bars, so there is both shallow and deep water close to shore. The beach stretches for several kilometres along both sides of the southern tip of the island.

ATTRACTIONS

Bornholm Island offers plenty of attractions which can enrich your surfing holiday. They include such activities as biking, kayaking, hiking, birdwatching and sightseeing in nature reserves. The island has a couple of interesting museums, historic ruins, churches and windmills. Bornholm is always associated with picturesque small towns and villages, including fishermen villages and harbours – some palaces (places?) look like they are from the Middle Ages. The island’s lack of industrialisation helps create the perfect atmosphere for a calm, relaxing break. The island is surrounded by diverse coasts, with broad beaches in the East and steeper coasts in the West and North.
