LOCATION

Bornholm Island has a network of biking routes including coastal, inland routes and mountain trails. The participants of Windsurfing Exploration Route are recommended to try a biking trail in the eastern and northern part of the island, close to surfing spots (e.g. Balka beach or the Dueodde Strand). Bornholm Island can be accessed either by the ferry from Ystad (Sweden), Køge (Zealand, Denmark) or Sassnitz (Rügen Island, Germany). In summertime there are direct ferries from Świnoujście (Poland). At Rønne there is also a small airport which services flights to Copenhagen. The geographical location of Bornholm Island’s capital Rønne is: 55°06′N 14°42′E.

BIKING ADVENTURE

There is not a lot of traffic on the roads and so biking here is relatively easy and safe. The suggested one-day biking route would start in Dueodde, proceed to Snogebæk (fishermen’s village and harbour) through Balka to Nexø (port town), then Årsdale (windmills village) to Svaneke (with a historical district in the town). On the way back the route would go through the natural areas of Bornholm to Almindingen, Åkirkeby, Sømarken and back to Dueodde. The round trip is 50-60 km, depending on the selected options and it allows exploration of both the inland and coastal areas of Eastern Bornholm. Bikers should not expect significant traffic and for many kilometres you can be the only biker on the route.

ATTRACTIONS

Bornholm Island offers plenty of attractions which can enrich your surfing holiday. They include such activities as biking, kayaking, hiking, birdwatching and sightseeing in nature reserves. The island has a couple of interesting museums, historic ruins, churches and windmills. Bornholm is always associated with picturesque small towns and villages, including fishermen villages and harbours – some palaces (places?) look like they are from the Middle Ages. The island’s lack of industrialisation helps create the perfect atmosphere for a calm, relaxing break. The island is surrounded by diverse coasts, with broad beaches in the East and steeper coasts in the West and North.
