LOCATION

The official name is “Strelasund Crossing” because the bridge crosses a lagoon (sound) of the Baltic Sea which separates the island of Rügen from the town of Stralsund on the German mainland. It is a one tower suspension bridge with 19 piers to carry the 3-traffic-lane street.

Coordinates: 54°17′24“N 13°07′12“E

SCENIC CHARACTER and DATA

Rügen Bridge is Germany’s longest bridge: 4.100 metres which conducts the traffic on 3 lanes between island and mainland. About 23.000 vehicles are crossing the bridge daily. The bridge is up to 128m high and offers clearance below of 42 metres for the ships and boats on the Strelasund.

Rügen Bridge has been opened in 2007 to disburden the old bridge, the “Rügendamm”; Rügendamm has too many and long opening periods for the crossing boats on the Strelasund and that disturbed the road traffic between mainland and island substantially.

ATTRACTIONS

The Rügen Bridge is a big landmark for tourists and delivers a nice view to the Hanseatic city of Stralsund. Unfortunately the bridge is exclusively for motor-traffic, means it is closed for pedestrians. Beginning in October 2007, the “Rügenbrückenlauf”, a running event, including a marathon crossing the bridge, attracts about 3500 runners annually.

The old bridge, the Rügendamm, is many months crowded by hundreds of anglers who try to catch herrings.
