12. Hel Peninsula Biking Route

LOCATION

Hel Peninsula Biking Route starts in Władysławowo, at the base of the peninsula and ends in the town of Hel – the final sea port on the route. It can be accessed from all surfing spots on the peninsula. This biking route is in close proximity to the Tricity area (Gdańsk-Sopot-Gdynia) in the Pomerania region of Poland (Hel is located approximately 30 km from Gdynia). It can be reached by local trains that set off from Gdynia and allow you to carry bikes, and it is also accessible by road.

The Gdansk area is accessible by two ferry connections from Sweden: Karlskrona-Gdynia and Nynäshamn – Gdańsk (Gdańsk has an international airport).

Władysławowo’s (the starting point) geographical location is 54°48′N 18°25′E.

BIKING HEL PENINSULA

The biking route on Hel peninsula is perhaps one of the most scenic in Poland. The beginning of the route in Władysławowo may not appear very special at first, but once the route has finished running parallel to the main peninsula road, it turns towards the fishing port of Chalupy and from here on in it becomes much more interesting. Cyclists can observe bobbin fishing boats, windsurfers and kitesurfers darting on the surface waters, and holidaymakers spending time on the shore. The route then runs alongside the quay and comes close to fish taverns and bars. From Chałupy to Kuźnice the biking route borders the sea. When the sky is blue, the water reflects this colour and shines in the sun. As it approaches Jastarnia the route goes in and out of the forest. When bikers finally reach Hel town – a settlement equally associated with naval and fishing activity – there are many bars and restaurants where they can eat fresh fish from that morning’s catch.

ATTRACTIONS NEARBY

Hel Peninsula is an interesting summer holiday location and guests come not only from Poland but other countries too. Hel town is home to a Marine Station that breeds Baltic Sea seals and also helps rehabilitate lost or injured individuals. The re-introduction of this rare species has proved to be successful and the station’s visitors can observe different activities connected with seal breeding. Another kite and windsurfing hotspot Rewa is also located close to biking route. Public transport runs frequently to and from Hel Peninsula and allows tourists to go on day trips or short breaks to Gdansk, Sopot or Gdynia. The Tricity area offers numerous sightseeing points and places of interest, for example: The Solidarity Museum, The WW2 Museum, Marine Museums, the historical Old Town district in Gdansk and the relaxing resort of Sopot.
