WARNEMÜNDE SURFING HOTSPOT

The surfing hotspot is located east of the mouth of the river Warnow and north of a broad white beach. Nearby, there is a ferry terminal and every two hours a bow wave is created by one such ferry and makes for a great performance area that lasts about half an hour and gives a unique surfing experience on the typically flat Baltic Sea. Waves range between 0.5 and 1.5 metres in height. The beach is often used by surfing schools which provide instruction and courses for youngsters and adults alike. In summertime surfing can be more difficult due to a congestion of tourists as the real surfing area is located behind the bathing zone. Surfers’ performances are guaranteed to draw an audience on most days as the beach is very popular with the young crowd. In the neighbourhood there are plenty of restaurants and places to stay.

ATTRACTIONS

A fishermen’s village is situated on the bank of the Warnow River and still maintains its charming old character. Alter Strom street, lined with lovely fishermen’s houses, offers pleasant walks alongside the river. Many of these houses are now used as art shops and galleries. At night the street takes on a new romantic quality with the bright lights from the old-fashioned lanterns shimmering off the river surface – perfect for an easy-going evening stroll. There is also a good selection of places to enjoy nightlife. The whole area has quaint architecture and lots of bars, cafes, restaurants, shops, and an information centre. Despite an increase in fleets dedicated to the tourist industry, you can still find many fishing ships docked in the quay.
