R2. WINDSURFING EXPLORATION. SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION 1

A. Public transportation

For the locals this route does not necessarily fits to using public transportation in every case. Local surfers carry with them boards, kites and other surfing equipment which typically is spacious and heavy. Using the car is a must. For the first kite or wind surfing course candidates, one can come without equipment and rent it on spot or it is included in the price. In this case public transport is OK.

If we assume that the arrival of more distant surfers takes place the situation is similar. The transfer from the airport to the surfing place by public transportation will be easy or more complicated but always time consuming. Relatively fast public transportation access from the airport to the surfing hot spots is only in Malmo, Gdansk Bay and Palanga. The rest of very attractive hot spots are very distant to international airports. In opinions of many surfers those more distant places are much better for wind or kite surfing. Due to the fact that the population density on the Baltic coast is not very high, the railway network is not so dense like in the rest of Europe and bus transportation goes very rare as well. In Denmark and Sweden public transportation is very expensive. If the guest surfer would like to visit 3-4 hot spots for one vacation visit it will be easy and cheaper with the private (rental) car and more or less difficult with the use of public transportation and sometimes more costly. It seems however that the walk to any of the surfing spots from the last public transportation stop will be no longer than 1,5-2 km. Ferries among south Baltic countries are fitted to carrying cars.

B. Private car

1. Driving culture. Generally in all South Baltic countries there is high driving culture: definitely highest is in Scandinavia and Germany but Northern Poland and Coastal Lithuania are safer than the rest of their countries.

2. Road rules. In all route countries police is strict, not corrupted and enforces the law. In Poland, Sweden and Lithuania there are very severe fines and penalties for drinking and driving. E.g. Polish police conducted in 2017 14 million of anti alcohol road controls. The driver must go calm and do not speed. Tickets for speed are high.

3. It is highly recommended that the cars would be used by 2-5 persons to allow for sustainable use of energy.

4. Road kindness is highest in Germany and Scandinavia and really foreign plates can receive road favors. Situation in Poland and Lithuania is also improving fast.

5. Cost of gasoline in all countries can differ 20-30% and are not very high. Parking fees in the surfing hotspots will not be high or the parking will be free.
