HISTORY AND SCENIC CHARACTER

The relic situated in the middle of the Peene river is the middle part of a former railroad bridge connecting the mainland with the island of Usedom. It was part of the railroad connecting Berlin from 1875 with the capital’s “swimming pool”, the popular holiday resorts on the island within a train ride of less than three hours. The railroad ended in Swinemünde, today Swinouscije/PL. The lift bridge was built in 1933, replacing the previous rotary bridge. In 1945, German military destroyed the superstructure of the bridge, the railway connection to the main land was – and remained – interrupted. The lift section of the bridge remained intact in 1945 and is now a symbol of outstanding engineering as well as for the senseless destruction of World War II. There is an active group of islanders, politicians and railroad enthusiasts campaining for the re-establishment of the train service.

ATTRACTIONS

The technical monument can best be seen from the water, taking a boat ride on the Peene river. There is a small ferry for pedestrians and cyclists crossing form Kamp on the mainland to Karnin on the island. The ferry stations and the boat ride also allow good views. The area in the Southwest of the island and on the adjacent mainland is a quiet area of natural beauty, i.e. Cycle tourists, bird watchers and friends of wilderness will have unforgettable experiences in the different parts of the nearby Peene valley natural park.
