LOCATION

The Österlen region is located in southern Sweden in the province of Scania. The only larger town in the area is Simrishamn. A smaller town on the south-western edge of the region is Ystad. The city in southern Sweden has a total of 18,806 inhabitants on an area of 11 km². There is a direct ferry connection to the islands Bornholm and Swinemünde. By car it takes one hour to reach the north-western town of Malmö. The city Ystad and the region Österlen are located directly at the Baltic Sea coast.

SCENIC CHARACTER

The Österlen region is known for its breath-taking landscape with woodlands, dunes, beaches, meadows and heathland. There are many small fishing villages and restaurants with traditional cuisine. The beautiful beaches and dunes of southern Sweden are in the direct surroundings of the city of Ystad. In the city, the long-distance cycle path through the Österlen region ends. Furthermore, a beautiful mixed forest borders the city in the east. Ystad has a historical centre with the over 700 year old monastery. A special feature are the well preserved half-timbered houses and the Saint-Marien church in the centre.

ATTRACTIONS

The region invites you to hike, climb, cycle, swim and relax. You can fish in the lakes of the region as well as in the Baltic Sea, among other things freshwater fish like pike, trout, wild salmon or zander. The Sydostleden is a national cycle path in the area. A special attraction for crime fans is Ystad, where the Wallander books are set. In the city there is the art museum, one of the best preserved medieval monasteries in Europe and a beautiful old town with lots of cafes and restaurants.
