LOCATION
It is a 20,000-square-mile (52,000-square-km) area immediately to the south of the Baltic coastal plains and extends 180 miles (290 km) eastward from the lower Vistula River to the borders with Lithuania and Belarus. It lies within the provinces of Warmińsko-Mazurskie and Podlaskie. There are more than 2,000 lakes.

The Masurian Lakeland (Pojezierze Mazurskie) is a region in north-eastern Poland. There are more than two thousand lakes. The relatively flat charming and authentic region together with warm and dry summers offer excellent possibilities for biking. More than twenty marked biking routes between forests, hills and lakes, cover the Masurian region. They wander through a gently undulating rural landscape with farms, small houses, churches, religious shrines, fields of wild flowers, wildlife, and thousands of lakes. Some roads are lined with sweetly scented lime trees. You can observe white storks either in flight, among low vegetation, in shallow water or nesting above barns. One of the most significant monuments of hydro-engineering listed by UNESCO, the Ostróda-Elbląg Canal, the route around the Mamry and Niegocin Lakes and the route through Borecka Forest are some of the most interesting destinations in Masuria. A network of canals connects the lakes, and regular ferries serve the communities around the lakes. It is therefore possible to ride to a destination, enjoy fresh fish from the lake, and then take the ferry back. Some of the many footbridges across the canals are equipped with cycle friendly tracks. Bicycle rental is available in the main touristic towns, like Ostróda, Elbląg, Węgorzewo, Ełk, or Giżycko.
ATTRACTIONS
Masurian Lake District offers a broad variety of touristic activities. The main are connected with a system of lakes and channels, which make the main sailing route. It stretches from the town of Węgorzewo in the north of the region, through Giżycko and Mikołajki, to Ruciane Nida in the south. It is an excellent base for canoeing, windsurfing and of course sailing – every summer the major lakes host international boat racing events. Biking and horse riding among forests, fields and lakes are just some of the ways to explore the Masurian land. The beauty of nature, clean and fresh air, friendly people – all of this and much more make Masurian Lake District one of the best spots for vacation in this part of Europe.
Visit Ostróda Castle, Archeology and History museum in Elblag. After a long ride tourists can swim in a lake and enjoy the clear water and take in the lovely scenery. Masuria, an area of outstanding natural beauty known as ‘land of a thousand lakes’ will take your breath away. Admire the most beautiful landscapes of forests, hills and swamps rich in flora and fauna, such as birds’ nests hidden in the undergrowth. Tourists can kayaking on the Krutynia Rive.
