LOCATION

The 20,8 meter high lighthouse is located on a hill (78 m) overlooking the bay of Wismar in the municipality Bastorf near Kühlungsborn.

Although the lighthouse is one of the smallest in Germany, the location on a hill makes the light with more than 95 meter the highest German lightfire. Its functions are orientation in the western part of the Baltic sea as well as to beware of Hannibal, a sandbank located before the bay of Wismar.

HISTORY AND SCENIC CHARACTER

After some dangerous incidents in the western part of the Baltic Sea the necessity to erect an additional lighthouse between Lübeck and Darsser Ort, construction started in 1876. The lighthouse started operation in 1878, fired with petroleum. In 1912 the fire was changed to electric power as one of the first lighthouses in Germany. After decades of manual operation, the last lighthouse keeper left the place.

The lighthouse and the associated buildings were renovated in the 1990s.

ATTRACTIONS

The place is a popular place of excursions from the nearby seaside resorts at the Baltic Sea coast. The destination can be reached by car. Many visitors approach the lighthouse by bicycle or hiking. The tower is open to the public and offers a fine view of the region, a restaurant invites to a relaxed stop. It is also possible to rent the former dwelling of the lighthouse keeper as holiday homes to get an impression of the life of a lighthouse keeper.
