HISTORY AND SCENIC CHARACTER

Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890), the excavator of Troy, spent his childhood in Ankershagen, as his father was parish priest there from 1823. Schliemann was fascinated by ancient Greek mythology early, but only after a successful career as merchant he could follow is interest in archaeology. In the age of 40 he started expeditions to Asia Minor, successfully excavating ancient Troy and the treasure of Priam in the 1870s. The museum is dedicated to the life and work of Heinrich Schliemann and has reopened with a newly designed exhibition. Another Schliemann-Memorial can be found in his birthplace, the vicarage in Neubukow, near the Hanseatic Town of Wismar.

ATTRACTIONS

Visitors are welcomed by a well-known artifact of Greek mythology: the Troy horse. The huge playground slide is located opposite the museum in the former vicarage. The museum is open in summer from Thursday to Sunday from 10 to 18 h, in winter from Wednesday to Sunday from 10 to 16 h. A small café invites to a contemplative rest beneath an impressive ash tree in front of the museum.

The small cobblestone church, originating in the 13th century, shows mural paintings from 13th and 15th centuries.

East of Ankershagen signposts lead to the spring of the river Havel, a 340 km long river, running from Mecklenburg through Berlin and Potsdam. Although it is controversial, if the place depicts the real spring of the river, the place is nevertheless worth a visit, due to its tranquil character.
