LOCATION

Powiśle (locally: Dolne Powiśle, less often Powiśle Gdański) is a contemporary geographical region covering the areas over the lower Vistula, on its eastern shore. This area is located in the historical Upper Prussia (reaching from the Vistula to Pasłęka). The Powiśle Region borders on the north with Żuławy, on the east with Warmia, on the south with the Chełmno Land and on the west with Kashubia. You can travel around the Powiśle region by car as well as by train and local bus lines.

ATTRACTIONS

Powiśle has no historical justification, however, it is nowadays used to identify residents and the area of the south-eastern area of the Pomeranian Voivodship and the north-west of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. The Powiśle Region is often identified with neighboring regions, especially Żuławy. The largest city and a capital of the Region is Kwidzyn. Powiśle Region has very interesting and complicated history. This region changed its nationality many times, which traces can still be seen in its monuments. The earliest references of this place come from the times when the Prusai ruled them, and in Powiśle there were two of the Prussian lands: Pomezania and Pogezania. In Powiśle to our times have survived two castles: the Kwidzyn castle of the Pomezanian chapter together with the adjacent cathedral – one of the best preserved, medieval strongholds in Poland and Sztumska stronghold – the place of organizing medieval fairs and tournaments of chivalry.
