3. BIKING ROUTE PALANGA-KLAIPĖDA

LOCATION

Palanga is located on the northern part of the Lithuanian Baltic coast 30 km from Klaipeda. The recommended biking route is Palanga – Klaipeda with different variants, Klaipeda-Palanga (25 km). Palanga is located 320 km from Vilnius, 280 km from Riga and 170 km from Kalingrad. Palanga – Gdańsk course going around the Russian Kaliningrad Region is 620km long and only 330km long when going directly through the region (it includes taking a ferry to Curonian Spit and 2 ex-EU border crossings). Klaipeda has two most popular ferry connections: Kiel- Klaipeda (from Germany) and Karlshamn – Klaipeda (from Sweden). Palanga has got its own regional airport. PALANGA-KLAIPEDA REGION BIKING

The bike trip starts from the northern Palanga and winds through the city and parks, to then go south to the Vydmantai village. The village landmarks are the tall Wind Park Installations. Next, the route leads through the pinewoods and the former lifeguard station in Nemirseta, Plaze Lake, and passes a fishing village of Karkle. Between Karkle and Village Giruliai there is a 1km long cliff with the top place called Dutchman‘s Cap. Nearly the whole bike path is located in the Seaside Regional Park with relatively little landscape diversity. When approaching Klaipėda the bikers can use numerous bike routes in the city and finish their trip in the sea harbour or historical centre. Klaipeda – Lithuania’s third biggest city, a historic seaport and resort.

ATTRACTIONS

Palanga and the nearby Klaipeda are popular coastal cities with two distinct characters. Main attractions of Palanga include: sea pier, long and broad sandy beaches, culinary attractions, various working fountains, cultural events, unusual museums (eg. Museum of dogs, Museum of illusions). Palanga is a resort town with relaxing atmosphere, but can be quite crowded in high season (July-August). Klaipeda is a Hanseatic city, a huge Baltic Sea port and a host of universities with typical big city attractions like museums, culture centers etc. In close vicinity there is the Curonian Spit, which is a National Park with enormous dunes, fantastic beaches and numerous places for sun bathing. Tourists can observe birds and other wild animals, such as deer.

Tourist can visit in Palanga: Palanga Amber Museum (containing one of the most abundant collections of amber inclusions and pieces in the world; has about 30 thousand exhibits in total), sea pier, Birute park and more. Tourists can visit in Klaipėda: Danės quay – Sailing vessel Meridianas, Underwater world of Lithuanian Sea Museum, Klaipeda Castle Museum and other. Also, tourists can explore the Old Town of Klaipeda with the Theatre Square and the statue of Ann from Tharau, as well as numerous old streets and buildings, including Linden street with the old post-office.
