5. ERIKSBERG NATIONAL PARK

LOCATION

Trensum, Karlshamn Municipality 374 96, Sweden

At over nine hundred hectares, Eriksberg is one of the largest wildlife enclosures in northern Europe, and the largest safari park and enclosed reserve in the Nordic region, with great bio-diversity. Eriksberg was purchased in 1938 by the well-known nature film maker and writer Bengt Berg. The area was fenced in as a result of his experiments with deer. The farm environment at Eriksberg is unique as well. There are buildings here that were constructed five centuries ago. Visitors can go on safari in Eriksberg and see wild animals in their natural environment. Red deer, fallow deer, european bison, wild boar and mouflons are moving freely in this exceptional landscape. The trail goes through the fascinating rocky landscape of oak forests, dense beech forests and gnarled pine trees. There is a rich birdlife here and one of the world’s largest population of the protected red water lily. The safari tour is about 10km long and visitors can drive their own cars through the park. The animals are naturally Eriksberg’s foremost attraction, but Eriksberg also offers different activities, e.g. beverage tasting, fishing, hiking, jacuzzi, pentathlon, keep-fit measures, climbing and canoeing/kayaking. Eriksberg conducts special guided tours for nature enthusiasts, so-called walking safaris, to see the bisons in close-up. Together with a guide, visitors can follow the bisons’ footsteps and get really close to them.
