SCENIC CHARACTER

The city owes its origin to the King of Scandinavia, Eric of Pomerania, who, wanting to take full control over shipping and trade in the Baltic Sea, built the fortress in Malmö, Helsingør, Copenhagen and founded the city fortress called Landskrona. The city built in the place of the former Danish fishing village Sønder Sæby in the province of Scania. Citadels facing each other guarded the passage through the strait – they were prepared for artillery attack and defence against enemy artillery. To gradually eliminate the commercial movement of Hansa ships, King Eric made contact with merchants from England, Holland and Novgorod. In 1422, King Eryk issued a decree in which only the Scandinavian cities obtained a monopoly on trade and craft in the Kalmar Union. In 1549, the Danish king Christian III built a castle in the same place. The castle and the Citadel have been one of the most modern fortresses in the Nordic countries for centuries. In 1720, the city, like its province, became part of Sweden. Today the Citadel is famous for its well-preserved system of moats. It is a witness to history and a beautiful recreational area.

ATTRACTIONS

There is a lot to see and experience around the Landskrona castle. In the area there are the oldest preserved gardens, from the water tower there are views of the city with the surroundings, over the busiest street of the world towards Copenhagen and Helsingör. In the nearby former barracks of Adolf Fredriks, today is a museum, considered one of the most interesting in the country. Here, the history of Landskrona is created in scenographic environments. The castle park is a gallery of contemporary art. Several times a day the ferry follows from Landskrona to the Ven island with an idyllic landscape.
