HISTORY AND SCENIC CHARACTER

The lighthouse was put into service in 1888. It is 28 m high, but due to the location on a little hill the focal height is 95 metres.

It is constructed by glazed white brick, unpainted and with a red lantern and roof.

It is an architectural heritage monument.

The complete island of Hiddensee is part of the National Park “Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft”, which is characterized by an attractive coast line, including cliffs, such as the hill country where the lighthouse is located.

ATTRACTIONS

A visit of the lighthouse is an absolute must for Hiddensee visitors. It can only be approached by foot, bicycles have to be parked short way down the hill area. Walking up to the lighthouse from the open landscape south-west of the lighthouse offers spectacular views of the picturesque Bodden landscape. Especially in early summer, with abundantly blooming yellow broom all around, the landscape is breathtaking.

South-east of the lighthouse walks through delightful beech forests lead to long stairs down to the coast.

Since 1994 the lighthouse is open to the public. The staircase has 102 steps.

It is well-known because in 2009 was a special post stamp issued by the Deutsche Post with this lighthouse.
