LOCATION

Westerplatte is a peninsula in Gdańsk which is situated at the mouth of the Dead Vistula. It is communicated with roads (can be reached by public buses). It is located in the Pomeranian Voivodeship in Poland. 54°24′N 18°40′E.

ATTRACTION DESCRIPTION

Westerplatte is a place where the first battle of the Second World War took place. It was a Polish exclave that was a location of the Polish Military Transit Depot. You may visit the ruins of the defenders’ barracks and guardhouses. Westerplatte is an interesting place to do history lessons especially for young people. A tall monument dedicated to the memory of Polish defenders is a characteristic object seen from afar.The Polish authorities pay homage to those killed in the war on the anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War (at night on the first day of September) each year.
