LOCATION
Østerlars Kirke (Østerlars Round Church) is located 5 km from Gudhjem town, Bornholm municipality, Capital region, on the north side of Bornholm island. Denmark is well known of its bicycle paths, so is Bornholm. In order to reach Gudhjem choose the path from Rønne to Gudhjem. If you prefer to take a bus, choose line 3 in Gudhjem. 55.1714°N 14.9617°E

ATRACTION DESCRIPTION
There are four famous romanesque style round churches in Bornholm: Nylars Kirke, Ols Kirke, Ny Kirke, Østerlars Kirke Østerlars Round Church, named after St Lawrence, is the oldest and the largest. It was erected in XII century. It served two purposes: religious and defensive. Like most medieval sacral buildings located in small settlements it was an enclave where all the villagers gathered in case of attack. Østerlars Kirke used to have windows, around the tower, but they were covered, and characteristic supporting buttresses were added. In the center of the building there is a huge 6 meters wide column covered with frescos. The paintings present scenes from the bible, concentrating mostly on life of Maria and Josef.
