LOCATION

The City of Schwerin is the capital of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It belongs the metropolitan region of Hamburg – about 100 km east of Hamburg. With less than 100.000 inhabitants it is the smallest federal state capital of Germany. Coordinates: 53°38′0“N 11°25′0“E.

HISTORY AND SCENIC CHARACTER

The settlement was first mentioned 1018 and received 1160 the municipal law. Thus, it is the oldest city of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In 15thcentury Schwerin became part of the Duchy of Mecklenburg and about 1500 began the construction of a palace. The city is enclosed by lakes, the palace is located on a small island in a lake. So, Schwerin is promoted as “City of Seven Lakes”.

ATTRACTIONS

The “Schloss Schwerin” (Schwerin Palace) is the main attraction – very close to the city center, the “Staatstheater” (City Theatre, built in 1886) and the “Staatliches Museum” ( State Art Museum), which has been erected in 1877-1882 in a neoclassical style. Another big attraction is the “Schweriner Kathedrale” (Cathedral) from 14thcentury constructed by brick.
