LOCATION

The sea resort Heiligendamm is located at the coastline of the Baltic Sea between the Hanseatic Cities Wismar and Rostock. It is the oldest seaside spa in continental Europa. Coordinates: 54°09′00“N 11°50′00“E.

HISTORY AND SCENIC CHARACTER

The seaside resort was established in 1793, the guests were from high society and nobility from throughout Europe. After World War II the buildings were used as sanatoria, after reunification of Germany in 1989/90 the old villas were bought by private investors and step by step renovated. This process is still going on, there are still several villas in first row under construction. The place is also known as “White Town by the Sea” (“Die weiße Stadt am Meer”) due to the row of white painted villas lining the beach promenade.

ATTRACTIONS

The seaside resort Heiligendamm is internationally well-known due to the hosting of G8 summit in 2007. A magnificent brick church, fortresses and castles as well as the exiting classicistic architecture high level hotels and private villas attract many tourists -just to have a sight on this destination.

The railway Molli with a steam-powered locomotive has a stop at the station of Heiligendamm on its way from Bad Doberan to Kühlungsborn.
