LOCATION
Vilm is an island in the Baltic Sea located very close (3 km) to the island of Rügen. It is one of the oldest protected areas in Germany (since 1936) and is now part of the core zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Südost-Rügen and also area of “EU Habitats Directive” (Conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora). The “International Academy for Nature Conservation” is located on the island since 1990 using some buildings for scientific work.
The access is limited to guided tours of up to 60 people per day in summer season – starting in Lauterbach on the island of Rügen with a small ferry boat.
Coordinates: 54°19′N 13°32′E.

This island is a Baltic Sea coast treasure. The landscape was shaped by the recent ice age (12.000 years ago). The natural appearance has changed permanently and is still changing.
Already in 1812 the ancient forests were protected and in 1936 the entire island was declared as nature protected area.
