LOCATION

Kashubia, located in the western part of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, in the drainage area of the Łeba and Radunia Rivers, are the stronghold of traditional religiousness of one of the indigenous groups of Pomerania inhabitants. Wejherowo with a baroque Calvary and Sianowo with St Mary’s Sanctuary are the spiritual capitals of the region. Lębork is an important Franciscan centre and a place where the worship of St James was reborn. Upon the initiative of Lębork, the more than 1000 kilometre Pomeranian St James’ Route, one of the European Camino de Santiago routes, has been restored. Lębork (Kash. Laborg, Germ. Lauenburg), 54°32′21″N 17°44′50″E, is the town selected in the region.

SIGHTSEEING

All the selected towns and villages are situated within 50 km from Lębork. Car is the optimum means of transport, although there are also convenient railway connections between Lębork and Wejherowo. A clearly marked walking trail – St James’ Route connects Sianowo and Lębork, and Smołdzino farther on (through Łeba), yet these are a few whole-day stages. The intention to visit the interiors of the Calvary in Wejherowo, Sanctuary in Sianowo and Church in Smołdzino is to be notified to the church administrators. Rowokół offers an observation tower available from May until September from 9 am to 6 pm, only in good weather.

ATTRACTIONS

Lębork is a town founded by the Teutonic Knights on the central part of the Łeba River. In the historical centre there is Gothic St James’ Church furnished in baroque style. It constitutes the central section of St James’ Route in Pomerania. The town boasts the comprehensively restored town fortifications. Wejherowo, located 30 kmfarther, was founded in 1643, creating the still imposing baroque Calvary, and establishing the Franciscan monastery. At present, Franciscan St Anne’s Church houses the Sanctuary of Our Lady Health of the Sick. The miraculous image of Mary crowned as the Queen of Kashubia in 1966, attracts pilgrims to Sianowo. Main parish fairs are held here in July and September. Nowa Huta villageboasts the huge Devil’s Stone, the biggest and legendary erratic boulder in Kashubia. Rowokół, one of the historical holy mounts of Pomerania is located nearSmołdzinosituated at the edge of the Slovincian National Park. The embankment walls of the former fortress have been preserved and an observation tower is situated there today. In the village there is also the Renaissance Church of the Holy Trinity founded by the Griffins. It is here that Hans Brüggemann, a pastor prepared for printing the Kashubian translation of songs by Martin Luther, one of the oldest literary monuments of Kashubia.
