SCENIC CHARACTER
The city has a well preserved medieval city centre. The heart of the city is a square market place with beautiful mansions around and a characteristic sculpture with green sheet metal in the middle (Wasserkunst). Buildings represent many styles: German gothic, Romanesque revival and art nouveau. The Town Hall is reconstructed, but represents the gothic architecture. The tower of St George’s Church helps with admiring a panorama of Wismar. Very impressive St Nicholas’ Church with a really high vaulting is something that you will never forget. The Old Hansa harbour is a very charming area where many people like going for a walk especially on sunny days.
ATTRACTIONS
Many cafes, restaurants for all budgets. You may buy fish directly from boats staying in the port. A permanent exhibition in the Town Hall’s cellars about the history of Wismar. Beautiful beaches, places for those who like surfing or diving. Many kilometres of bike routes. If you would like to experience the city from the water, you may take a ship tour.
