HISTORY AND SCENIC CHARACTER

The building was constructed 1726 – 1732 as Baroque country house, strongly influenced by English and Dutch architecture. The owner was Count Hans Caspar von Bothmer. Today the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern owns the ensemble. It was renovated in 2009-2015 and now it is open to the public. It is located on an Island and surrounded by a park which has changed its character over the centuries from a baroque park to a landscape park.

ATTRACTIONS

The castle offers a museum with 20 rooms – showing the life of the Hans Caspar von Bothmer. Today it is a venue for conferences and has served as film location for different productions. The Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a music festival in summer with concerts at various locations throughout the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, traditionally host some concerts at Schloss Bothmer, including an open air concert in the park. A café for visitors is in the former orangery and an avenue of linden trees (“Festonallee”) with a length of 270 metres invites tourists for a relaxing afternoon.
