Coordinates: 54°23′01“N 13°41′57“E.

1. Sellin Pier

HISTORY AND SCENIC CHARACTER

The first pier was built in 1906 – 508 m long. But a fire in 1920 and pack ice damaged the pier and in 1925 a new pier was built. In winter 1941/42 it was damaged again – but the bridge house could still be used and after World War II people used the building as popular dancing hall. Due to low level of maintenance the building was demolished in 1978. In 1992 started the construction of a new, 394 m long pier, based on old plans. On 2nd April 1998 the pier with a restaurant was opened officially.

As the pier is located directly in front of a high cliff a stairway and a lift connect the pier with the resort. From the top of the cliff you have a very nice view down to the pier with the restaurant.

ATTRACTIONS

Due to the view at the pier with restaurant below the cliff this location delivers one of the most well-known touristic pictures of Rügen island. Marketing likes to promote this pier as “Sophisticated Lady in White”, as “Germany’s most beautiful pier” and the 85 stairs to enter the resort as “stairway to heaven”.

The pier has a restaurant and a diving gondola (Tauchgondel) attracts additionally tourists.

The main tourism street of the resort (“Wilhelmstraße”) ends at the top of the stairway. This street shows many houses with the typical spa architecture style.
